Character Name: Akane Tendou, she/her
Canon: Ranma 1/2
Age & Romance Preferences: 16 at manga start, but several years clearly pass without a birthday to mark them; call it 17-18, Whatever Ranma's Age Is. Akane is canonically bisexual and has a thing for kind hearts and strong arms, no matter the gender.

Canon Point: Immediately after the arc where Kuno decides to train on watermelon island to cut watermelons explicitly to impress women... and gets amnesia by smacking himself in the head with a wooden sword because cutting watermelons has become reflex. At this point, Ranma has faced off against just about the toughest recurring foes in the series at least once, including the fearsome Pantyhose Taro, has achieved his first super-move, and people have started to kidnap Akane an awful lot to get at Ranma. She's kind of sick of it.

History: In a world where martial arts bullshit is rampant and neighborhood councils ask wandering martial artists to handle demons, horrors, and bandits while also asking 500 yen a year to arrange for garbage collection, there sits in the Nerima ward of the Tokyo prefecture a large house with an attached dojo, where live the Tendou family.

Of the Tendous, the mother is dead, the father no longer motivated save to play go; and there are three daughters. It's the youngest we concern ourselves with, and as far as the above, it could be said Akane's the truest heir to the dojo-- motivated, strong, and fully capable of handling schoolyard bullies by the dozen and handily defeating even the worst of her neighborhood in a moment, and coming back around tomorrow to do it all again while accomplishing focus and strength training in her spare time.

And then along came her father's friend, Genma, and his son, Ranma, to complete an arranged marriage. There were some early misunderstandings vis a vis a curse, but it was pretty quickly decided that Ranma and Akane were of a kind, without either of their input.

This... Later turned out to be true, but it took much pulling of teeth before either one was willing to admit to even the barest of feelings-- not least because they keep hitting each other in verbal sore spots. Constantly. At length. Usually because of the aforementioned demons, horrors, and bandits launching them into some form of trouble, again.

The last and worst of these so far was Pantyhose Taro, the latest in a long line of jerks who decided (rightly) that the best way to get to Ranma is to kidnap Akane. Whether it's out of duty or pride or hidden feelings, Ranma has come to the rescue, every time, and every time, has refused to admit anything like an emotion is behind those eyes.

Personality: In the first volume, Akane is described as "violent, but a sweet girl", and generally, this is true. She's kind, pleasant to be around, and sociable. She has several hobbies, primarily martial arts, and has a tendency towards utilitarian clothing.

This said, she has a vicious humor streak, taking delight in others' failures, especially in areas she considers herself fairly expert in. Often in the manga, this will be at Ranma's expense, but no one is spared the wrath of her deadpan, save maybe her sisters.

No one's spared the wrath of her wrath, either. Akane tends to have a hard time with her anger, exacerbated by jumping to unfortunate conclusions, most of which are extremely understandable in the circumstances, while others occasionally less so. These habits tend to be made worse by her family's near-complete lack of communication skills and her understandable suspicion given her deadbeat father. When they called her 'violent', they were not kidding. In most of the two-man comedy routines that make up her everyday life, Akane's the one playing the somewhat smarter straight-man to many, many, many idiots.

That's not to say she doesn't try, in general, to be relatively kind and pleasant. And it's definitely not to say she doesn't want to prove that she's generally desirable. She just has no idea what her strong points are sometimes, to everyone's detriment.

In romance, Akane is given to flights of fancy, is nervous around topics of love, and will often find herself realizing only belatedly, or far too late, that she enjoys or despises someone's presence. She has a type ("strong, caring, shares her interests") and does not mind being swept off her feet... at least, sometimes. She values honesty and courage, especially when it comes to one's own feelings, a thing that constantly puts her in opposition to Ranma's own nervousness and toxic masculinity in the story.

Abilities: This is a girl who breaks cinder-blocks for fun and stress relief, and has been seen lifting people bigger than her without an issue, as well as large pieces of concrete, all in her first appearance. In terms of martial arts, she'd generally be considered pretty talented, and to win against dozens of armed opponents in melee without aid is quite a feat. To do it in time to make it to classes every morning for weeks on end is a staggering accomplishment of talent and endurance.

If she had someone actually interested in developing her talents, she'd be at or near-peer with her fiancé. As it stands, she's stagnated, and she knows it... and it rankles.

These abilities have not, in fact, been nerfed.

Bloom Bond Flower:
Hyacinth: Akane is generally kind and gregarious, having a social charm that most of the main fiancé crew in Ranma 1/2 lack. When she speaks, it's from the heart, when she cries, that's from the heart, too. And, well, she sure has done an awful lot of rash things. Enough to help fill 38 tankoubon.
